Job Summary:
The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) OR experienced surgical tech is responsible for assisting the veterinarian(s) in surgery and for providing direct support the Director of Operations with daily shelter operations that include animal care, treatment, testing, and documentation.Hours:
1 -2 days per weekPay:
$16-20 per hourPrimary Duties & Responsibilities
Assist the veterinarian:
Assist the veterinarian with surgery and medical evaluations as needed. Duties in surgery include the following:-
- Anesthesia machine maintenance (the machine will be professionally serviced every year)
- Patient preparation
- Surgical recovery care
- Surgical instrument care
- Maintenance and inventory of surgical supplies
- Post-Surgery care
Daily shelter operation support:
- Conduct a log of all shelter animals undergoing treatment or behavioral modification. The log is reviewed by the Director of Operations and then shared with all leadership staff
- Look for any routine illness or medical issues that require treatment
- Provide ongoing health checks on shelter animals as requested by the Director of Operations, assist in triaging animals that require veterinarian checks or can be treated internally
- As needed, perform Animal Care Technician duties that include cleaning, feeding, and daily rounds.
Other duties as assigned.
Supervision:

Job Summary:
Primary responsibilities include care of shelter animals in accordance with state animal welfare laws and the policies of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society (KVHS). It is expected to have sanitary and humane operation of the kennel facilities and to provide the highest level of animal care and customer service. All duties are also completed while doing animal showings and adoptions with perspective families. KVHS’ goals are reflected in the work completed and provided to potential adopters and visitors.Hours:

$14.80 per hourPrimary Duties & Responsibilities
Technical:
- Responsible for ensuring the health of the animals by following shelter protocols in sanitizing kennels and reporting health problems to a supervisor.
- Provide direct care of animals including feeding, bathing, medical evaluations, and administering medications and vaccines.
- Responsible for collecting urine and fecal samples for lab use.
- Participate and conduct health evaluations of incoming animals. This could, but not limited to, the following:
- Deworming
- Flea Treating
- Drawing Blood
- Vaccinating
- Removing parasites (ticks and fleas)
- Observe and report to the Director of Operations of any behaviors that would affect placement of animals.
- Handle showings with both cats and dogs assigned by supervisor.
- Conduct and complete adoptions of shelter pets with new families.
- Enter medical and other data into PetPoint software.
- Responsible for ensuring persona and visitor safety by following shelter procedures for treatment and reporting of any injuries, including animal bites and scratches.
- Ensure the animals for adoption have proper documentation and known medical and/or temperament issues are clearly articulated to potential adopters.
- Other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
Administration:
- Responsible for maintaining accurate records of admissions, releases, and adoptions – including stray claim forms and 10-day licenses.
- Responsible for accurately noting all pertinent information into PetPoint regarding all aspects of animal care.

Facilities:
- Maintain building/grounds to ensure the health of animals and presentability to the public.
- Responsible for identifying facility issues and reporting them to a supervisor.Public Relations:
- Enhance and promote community awareness of KVHS’ goals and services through contact with visitors.
- Answer the phones, route calls to appropriate people, and greet the public as they enter the facility.
- Respond to routine public inquiries as appropriate, refer non-routine inquiries and problems to the Director of Operations or the Executive Director.
- Refer any calls/inquiries from the media (TV, Radio, Print) to the Executive Director.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the public, area animal control officers, shelter veterinarians, staff, volunteers, and the Board of Directors.
- Other duties assigned by a supervisor.
Supervision:
The Animal Care Technician directly reports to the Director of Operations.Education, Prior Work Experience, Specialized Skill & Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of the state animal welfare and rabies laws; knowledge of various breeds of animals. How to handle animals properly, and recognize common diseases
- Must treat animals humanely with compassion both on and off the job and transmit these values to others.
- Ability to communicate well and work cooperatively with the Director of Operations, the Executive Director, shelter staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, and the general public.
- Strong PC skills and working knowledge of various software such as word processing and excel.
- Excellent organizational and analytic skills
- Ability to accept supervision as appropriate.
- A valid State of Maine driver’s license.
